11:10 am – 11:40 am: When the Comm Stack Is a Blob: Integrating a Closed Protocol into a Zephyr Application, Using Amazon Sidewalk as the Case Study – Martin Moya, Embedded Systems Engineer, Focus

Sooner or later most developers hit the same wall: a vendor hands a protocol stack or application as prebuilt libraries and a thin abstraction layer, and it has to live inside an otherwise open application without letting it dictate the architecture. Amazon Sidewalk is an unusually clear example. The protocol is owned and licensed by Amazon, the stack ships as binaries, and on Nordic hardware it reaches you through a Zephyr-based platform abstraction layer you can read and patch.

This talk is a report on actually doing it outside the US, where the network has not been deployed yet and the bench setup follows Amazon’s documented non-US testing path. The recurring problem is attribution: when something misbehaves, deciding whether the fault is in the application, in the glue layer, or inside a binary that it is not possible step into, and what instrumentation must be built or rely on to answer that quickly rather than by bisection.

The second is architecture under flash pressure: the stack is large, DFU OTA has to fit alongside it, and that constrains the slot layout, bootloader configuration, how much application can be afforded and if the system can rely on using the communication interfaces independently of the stack. This presentation shows what those constraints looked like in practice, what the integration costs in flash, RAM and average current, and how to run CI against a stack that cannot be built from source.

This presentation finishes by comparing it against Zephyr’s in-tree LoRaWAN stack on the same radio and the same board. Where the difference is not the protocol but what you can do when it breaks. The Sidewalk specifics are the example; the takeaways are meant to transfer to any binary-blob integration developers have to deal with.

11:45 am – 12:15 pm: Bluetooth Channel Sounding Performance – Mariano Miguel Franceschetti, Embedded Engineer, Iomico

This presentation narrates a Bluetooth Channel Sounding performance test using Zephyr as the OS for the chosen MCUs. It depicts multiple tests to assess BLE CS performance under different circumstances and radio configurations.

12:35 pm – 1:05 pm: Nodo lorawan multipropósito – Portabilidad de firmware embebido entre plataformas con Zephyr RTOS – Maximiliano Graf, SW engineer – Embedded Systems Specialist, INVAP SAU – FIUBA

This academic work presents the implementation of a LoRaWAN class A node using Zephyr RTOS, with a particular focus on software portability across different hardware platforms. It also explores the challenges and solutions involved in using development boards that are not officially supported by Zephyr.

1:10 pm – 1:25 pm: Leveraging the Zephyr Shell for Hardware Bring-Up, Testing, and Provisioning – Facundo Zingarelli, Embedded Software Engineer, Iomico

The Zephyr’s Shell subsystem is typically used for manual UART debugging, but it can also be used for board bring-up, factory testing, and provisioning. This talk shares an implementation approach for a custom Shell that unifies these behind a single API, significantly easing the complementary software a project can sometimes need around it. Examples: GUIs for calibration, data backups, provisioning, etc.
