Zephyr + Dronecode - Guadalajara Meetup - July 8, 2025

Why You Should Attend

This isn’t just another meetup, it’s a gathering focused for developers, engineers, industry leaders, and open source contributors who are shaping the future of real-time edge computing.

This year’s theme, “Empowering the Edge,” highlights the real-world impact of Zephyr RTOS and PX4-powered systems in applications ranging from IoT and robotics to industrial automation.

What’s on the Agenda?

5:00 PM – 5:30 PM – Welcome Snacks & Drinks

5:30 PM – 6:00 PM – Welcome Note & Zephyr: Open Source Project Best Practices Over Time – Ramon Roche, The Linux Foundation

In 2024, the Zephyr project hit a milestone by becoming one of the few open source projects with over 100,000 commits in it’s main repo. Why are developers joining and contributing to it?

When the project launched in 2016, there was the commitment from the start apply known best practices to its development. While Zephyr is a different code base, a lot of the lessons learned from the Linux Kernel Community were applied to forming it’s community. The project focused on incorporating security best practices as the were identified right from the start, and is now working towards formal safety certification.

This talk will go through some of the best practices that have been applied for developing open source projects, and illustrate the results of applying these best practices.

6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Getting started with Zephyr on NXP MCX microcontrollers, Jose Ruiz, NXP Semiconductor

Are you ready to explore the power of real-time operating systems in embedded development? Join us for an introductory session on Zephyr RTOS, tailored for developers working with NXP MCX microcontrollers. This hands-on meetup will guide you through the essentials of setting up your development environment, building your first Zephyr application, and understanding the core components of the Zephyr ecosystem.

We’ll cover:

  •       An overview of Zephyr RTOS and its architecture
  •       Setting up Zephyr for NXP FRDM-MCXC444 board
  •       Toolchains, west, and board configuration basics
  •       Building and flashing your first application
  •       Tips for debugging and extending your project

Whether you’re a beginner or transitioning from another RTOS, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to kickstart your Zephyr journey on NXP hardware.

6:30 PM – 6:45 PM – Break Time

6:45 PM – 7:15 PM – Dronecode: A Decade of Open Source Autonomy, Ramon Roche, The Linux Foundation

PX4 has grown from a university project into one of the most widely adopted open-source flight control stacks — and it’s just one piece of the larger Dronecode ecosystem. In this talk, we’ll explore the architecture of PX4 as it stands today: modular, RTOS-based, Linux-compatible, and designed to power everything from quadcopters to VTOLs and underwater drones.

But PX4 doesn’t fly solo. We’ll also dive into how supporting projects like MAVLink, MAVSDK, QGroundControl, and the Pixhawk open standards work together to deliver a fully open-source stack for robotics and aerospace. Whether you’re targeting embedded Linux platforms, working with ROS 2, or deploying high-level autonomy, this session connects the dots across real-time systems, communication middleware, and full-system integration.

7:15 PM – 7:45 PM – QZPro: The game changer for fast and easy development, Alexis Guijarro and Leonardo Garcia, 3DR, Inc.

At 3DR, we have been working to push the boundaries to create an easy, quick way for developers to meet their goals. Our latest efforts took us to rethink the way things are done in the drone industry, resulting in a novel approach, the QZPro. Introducing interesting features for a variety of audiences, thanks to its small form factor, accessible configuration, low-power features, and capabilities for fast prototyping. In this session, we will discuss a fresh approach to interacting with quadrotors using open-source resources such as PX4, OpenMV, and MicroPython. We will explore how to utilize these resources to learn about drones and even program custom applications powered by AI, experimental frameworks, or sensors.

7:45 PM – 8:00 PM – Quiz & Board distribution followed by thank you note (Ramon Roche, The Linux Foundation & Jose Ruiz, NXP Semiconductor)

8:00 PM – 9:00 PM – Networking time
