The Zephyr Project participated in Open Source Summit Europe 2025 (August 25–27, Amsterdam), the premier gathering for open source developers, technologists, and community leaders. With more than 2,000 attendees representing over 900 organizations, the event once again highlighted the strength, diversity, and innovation of the open source ecosystem.

Open Source Summit Europe 2025

This year was extra special as Zephyr Developer Summit (ZDS) ran alongside Open Source Summit  Europe, creating a unique space for embedded developers, contributors, and community members to connect and collaborate.

Zephyr Booth – B23

The Zephyr team was on-site to welcome the community at Booth B23, where visitors could:

  • Explore demos showcasing Zephyr in real-world applications
  • See products powered by Zephyr RTOS in action
  • Meet maintainers, contributors, and fellow users
  • Pick up exclusive Zephyr swag (including the ever-popular kites!)

Community participation was a big part of the booth. Developers were invited to showcase their Zephyr-based products or demos.

Demo and Product Highlights:

  • WebAssembly + Zephyr – showing platform-independent workload deployment on heterogeneous systems (Diego Buffa & Tony Crupi, WindRiver)
  • Dining Philosophers Problem – ZHAW’s lab exercise demonstrating concurrency challenges and solutions with Zephyr (Flavio Felder, Vixay Phimmasane, ZHAW)
  • CI Status Indicator – a creative conversation starter showing Zephyr CI live status (Fabio Baltieri, Google)

Products Powered by Zephyr:

This includes HealthyPi Move, SenseCAP T1000-S LoRaWAN Tracker, Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen™ 7040), GARDENA Smart Irrigation Control, Vestas wind turbine model, Lildog and Lilcat tracker, träck LoRa® tracker, Sentrius™ MG100 Gateway, Telespor Radiobjella livestock tracker, and ProGlove wearable solutions.

Zephyr Talks and Track Highlights

The Zephyr track at OSS Europe 2025 + Zephyr Developer Summit brought together developers, maintainers, and users for three days of technical deep dives and real-world use cases.

Talks covered security and safety with sessions on cryptography updates, bridging architecture to IEC 61508 compliance, and a dedicated Functional Safety BoF. Tooling and productivity were also in focus, including sessions on workqueues, West, Zephyr Workbench for VSCode, Twister testing, memory management, and energy optimization.

Attendees explored real-world applications, from running Zephyr in a light bulb, OTA upgrades, and video subsystems, to ML on microcontrollers, MQTT-SN for constrained devices, and even DOOM running on Zephyr. Industry leaders like Ac6, AlektoMetis, BayLibre, Blecon, Carl Zeiss, Doulos GmbH, Embient, Google, inovex GmbH, Intel, IRNAS, Linumiz, MAB Labs Embedded Solutions, Magpie Embedded, Mind, Navimatix GmbH, Nordic Semiconductor, NXP, Plentify, Protocentral Electronics, Raspberry Pi, sevenlab engineering GmbH, soundsensing, Tenstorrent, UFAL/Citrinio, UL Solutions, Vestas Wind Systems A/S, and Zühlke Engineering AG shared insights on product development, connectivity, hyper-optimized context switching, and more.

The track also featured community sessions such as Documentation BoF and Meet the Maintainers, giving contributors a chance to connect directly and help shape the project’s direction.

Together, these sessions highlighted Zephyr’s growing maturity across safety, tooling, and real-world deployments in IoT, automotive, medical, and consumer devices.

Looking Ahead

In the coming weeks, we will share more detailed highlights and recordings from the Zephyr Developer Summit sessions. Stay tuned.
